Sanctuary
December 2024
TO ALL OUR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS
Of all the letters that I have written over the years, this is truly the most difficult and the most emotional one that I have ever had to send.
After a great deal of soul-searching, deliberation and discussions with my Board of Directors, I have made the challenging decision to close Dog Lodge. The last day of operation will be the 31st of December 2024. The majority of our dogs are with permanent foster families now. The last three hospice dogs will remain with me for whatever time they have left.
I am heartbroken. I have spent most of my life rescuing dogs and the last 10+ years rescuing and caring for senior and senior special needs dogs to the exclusion of virtually everything else. However, due to recent health concerns that are going to require my full attention, it has become clear that prioritizing my recovery and focusing on my physical well-being are paramount.
The passion that I have for dogs is a huge part of who I am and that will never change. I take with me the most amazing experiences and memories, both happy and sad and they will stay with me forever. I find it extraordinarily difficult to imagine not being able to help needy dogs. Hopefully, when my health gets back on track, I will be able to get involved again to some degree. In the meantime, we will keep our Facebook page open. We want to continue sharing resources whenever and wherever possible. A great deal of effort has been put into creating a page that is positive and inspirational and hopefully we can keep that going.
As usual, we will not discuss specific rehoming suggestions on our page or via Messenger. Anyone who is trying to rehome a dog is welcome to send an email to info@doglodge.org that includes as much information as possible about the dog i.e. approximate age, breed, size, any health issues and/or any behavioral issues of concern. It is also useful to know where you live. We will do our best to make suggestions for you.
I have met, either directly or indirectly, some of the most wonderful people while I have been involved in animal welfare. I include in that number not only those who offered financial support but also the wonderful people who worked with me at the Dog Lodge facility. None of what we were able to accomplish at Dog Lodge would have been possible without the dedicated backing of so many folks. Your generosity and support allowed us to make a real difference in the lives of the dogs that came to us. My thanks to all of you for caring and for your shared compassion throughout the years. I will be forever grateful for your unwavering commitment to our mission…
With Fond Regards,
